Marsh & McLennan Companies Awarded the Carbon Trust Standard in the United Kingdom
London, 9 August, 2011 – Marsh & McLennan Companies, Inc. (NYSE: MMC) announced today that the Company has been awarded the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard across its core offices in the United Kingdom for its work and ongoing commitment to reduce its carbon footprint.
The Carbon Trust recognises business and public sector organisations for demonstrable carbon reduction. Based on a rigorous, independent assessment, it certifies that organisations have measured, managed and reduced their carbon emissions across their own operations, and are committed to reducing them year on year. Since 2008, over 500 Carbon Trust Standard certifications have been issued globally.
The Company was recognised for improved carbon management at five of its U.K. offices: its European headquarters at Tower Place in London; Chichester; Croydon; Norwich; and Witham. Three of Marsh & McLennan Companies’ operating companies – Marsh, Guy Carpenter and Mercer – are located in these cities.
Among the initiatives undertaken by Marsh & McLennan Companies were significant consolidation of office space, which saved the equivalent of approximately 10 percent of the core sites' annual carbon dioxide emissions, and the introduction of LED lighting technology at the Company’s Tower Place offices, an ongoing programme that will continue to reduce the Company’s carbon footprint.
“Marsh & McLennan Companies has taken a rigorous approach to improving its environmental sustainability profile, and reducing our carbon emissions has been an important component of this work. Our offices in the United Kingdom have been leading these initiatives and we are very pleased to see these efforts recognised, “said Elizabeth Barry, Marsh & McLennan Companies Chief Sustainability Officer
“Being certified with the Carbon Trust Standard is proof that an organisation has taken genuine action to reduce its impact on climate change. We congratulate Marsh & McLennan Companies on this achievement,” said Harry Morrison, General Manager, the Carbon Trust Standard.
Carbon Trust Standard bearers are required to recertify every two years to ensure a continuing reduction in their environmental impact, at which point the Company’s goal is to be in a position to reapply for the Standard to encompass its entire U.K. portfolio.
Marsh & McLennan Companies has made a strategic commitment to reducing its environmental impact and providing a healthy and environmentally conscious workplace. In addition to incorporating sustainable practices in its own operations, Marsh & McLennan Companies offers an array of environmental risk management solutions and services to assist its clients in analysing, reducing and managing their own environmental impact.
